Word Problem (The Luggage Rack) HELP PLEASE?

A family was about ready to leave on their camping trip. They loaded up their van with stuff, but it was getting really full with all kinds of equipment, plus five dogs. (Everyone had his or her own dog.) They were trying to decide whether to take the luggage rack for the top of the van to store some of their camping gear, or wheter they should just cram it all inside the van. Papa didn’t want to take the luggage rack because he said their gas mileage would be worse because of the increased drag. Mama said she didn’t want to be crowded inside the van, and she didn’t care how much it cost, she wanted to take it. Papa said they got 20 miles per gallon with the luggage rack off, and 17 miles per gallon with it on. Their destination was 3 hours away at 55 miles per hour with the rack off, but with the rack on they could only go 50 miles per hour. Gas cost $1.89 per gallon. How much more would it cost them to take the luggage rack, and how many extra minutes would it take them to get there?

    55 miles * 3 hrs = 165 miles.

    165/20 mpg = 8.25 gal
    165/17 = 9.70 gal

    9.70-8.25 = 1.45 gal

    1.45 gal * 1.89 per gal = $2.75

    165/50 mph = 3.3 hours

    3.3 – 3.0 = 0.3 hours

    60/10 = 6 minutes in 0.1 hours

    18 minutes in 0.3 hours

So $2.74 or 2.75 more and 18 minutes longer .
